Improving Jewelry Fabrication and Design Skills

The Lapidary & Silversmith Club is excited to have Dave Nelson, one of our club's expert jewelers, offer this special - not for beginners - workshop.
The Intermediate and advanced curriculum will be presented and demonstrated during 4 sessions (Nov. 23 & 30, Dec.14 & 21) and limited to 6 students . Significant practice time outside of the workshop will be necessary. Participants will be able to work at their own pace but must have some experience and their own set of basic tools* & supplies**.

The focus of the Workshop will be on making a series of earring projects (in silver) and on practice projects to allow students to become more experienced and proficient with common jewelry hand tools (torches, bench pins, saws, files, pliers, dividers, square, and measuring tools).
Materials Fee: $ 225.00 (covers all 4 sessions) Payable by November 21, 2025.

WORKSHOP Silversmith 1 - Bezel Set Stone
When: Monday and Tuesday, December 8 and 9, 2PM-5PM
THIS IS A 2-DAY INTERMEDIATE LEVEL WORKSHOP
PLEASE DO NOT REGISTER WITHOUT HAVING FULFILLED THE FOLLOWING PREREQUISITES
Prerequisites:
Learn to make a bezel cup for a pendant. You must be comfortable with your soldering skills to attend this workshop. Although some tools will be made available for this class, you are encouraged to bring your own tools.

Materials Fee: $65 (to be paid to the teacher at the beginning of class)
Additional Information: Wear old clothes, closed-toe shoes. Tie long hair back. Optivisor magnification can be provided. Open flames will be used, so oxygen tanks cannot be allowed. Strong magnets in some equipment may affect a pacemaker; concerned individuals seek advice from your physician.
This workshop will be offered throughout the Winter Season, although other dates have not been confirmed. Once they are confirmed they will be listed in the Club Calendar. If you wish to attend a club event and it is listed on the calendar you can click on it and register for it before the announcement email is sent out to all the members.
Learn to Solder Workshop
When: Saturday, December 13, 10:00AM - 2:30PM
Teacher: Mary Cavanaugh
This is an INTERMEDIATE LEVEL Workshop
Required prerequisites to attend:
Learn the Torch (GVR Course) OR previous annealing experience
Students will learn the basics of torch soldering to make jewelry. Begin developing skills and confidence needed to fabricate jewelry from silver and other metals. Wear closed-toe shoes and long pants. Optivizor (magnifier) and tools provided.
Materials charge: $40 (to be paid to teacher at beginning of workshop)
Location: West Center Lapidary Shop
This workshop will occur once a month during the Fall season. Each with separate registrations. Click on a future event on the calendar to registrar early. Four students per workshop.
On Monday, December 15, Willie Caldwell will demonstrate the use of the Jump Ring Saw at the East Lapidary Shop. The demo starts at 9AM.
If you would like to get certified to use the saw on your own bring a 2ft length of copper wire of either 16 or 18 gauge to make your own jump rings. This can be purchased at the hardware store.
Your Proficiency Card will be initialized once you are certified, so remember to bring it with you if you have one.

The Club added this workshop in response to club members’ requests. It follows the familiar Open Studio format, allowing you to bring your own project, use the studio and club tools, pose questions to a hands-on instructor, and work at your own pace. To participate, you should have prior experience with metal clay or have completed a class with Kris or another instructor, but you may come to watch and learn by observation.
You need to furnish your own metal clay, embellishments, and findings, such as ear wires and jump rings.

Lost Wax Casting Workshop
Date: Wednesday, Dec 17, and Thursday, Dec 18
Time: 9AM-12PM
Registration is required to attend this workshop
INTERMEDIATE LEVEL
Prerequisites: Learn the Torch class or verified experience
Learn the art of making jewelry from a wax model. Students will learn about the casting process and assist the Cast Master with their casting. As a result of the class, students will understand the basic fundamentals of the lost wax casting process, metal finishing tools and becoming a technicist to complete their takeaway silver pendant, earrings, or ring.
Material Fee: $40 (payable to the instructor at the beginning of workshop)
Location: East Lapidary Studio
Maximum Number of Students: 5
This workshop will repeat occasionally each season and requires registration. To register for other dates before an announcement goes out to all members, click on another workshop of interest and register.
Saw & Rivet Cool Earrings Workshop
When: Friday, December 19, 12:30-4pm
Teacher: Trudy Baker
This is an Intermediate Level Workshop
Learn the basic jewelry makers’ skills of using a jewelers’ hand saw and easy riveting to hold component parts together. Both brass and copper will be used, and you’ll have a unique earring design that you’ll be able to replicate in various creative shapes. You will learn to use Lapidary Club tools including a drill press, bench pin, texture & riveting hammers, files, patina solution, and polishing tools. All project materials will be provided. There are saws to borrow and some hand tools. If you have a saw and sturdy wire cutters, please bring them. Wear safety glasses, close-toed shoes, apron, & tie long hair back.
Materials Fee: $20 (to be paid to teacher at beginning of workshop)

Maximum Number of Students: 6
When: Friday, January 9, 1:30-5pm
Minimum one individual; maximum five individuals per workshop
You can sign up for this open-studio workshop once you take "Metal Clay Jewelry" or another metal-clay class. Bring your project to life using the studio and tools with the hands-on instructor. You can learn how to join clay pieces to give your creation depth, roll the perfect texture, add a bail, embellish your work with syringe clay, and include CZs or dichroic elements. You can sign up without a particular project to observe, learn, and be inspired.
