WHAT IS A MONITOR?

One of the volunteer positions is Lapidary Center Monitor. You are responsible for maintaining the safety and proper use of equipment for qualified members. You are in charge of monies, sales, and support where needed. Each Center has at least two monitors in the morning and two in the afternoon to assist the members with their work and endeavors. In return for this responsibility and volunteer hours, a monitor may display their jewelry creations in the Lapidary Center Shops for sale to GVR members and the public. GVR LAPIDARY CLUB SHOP RULES

The Facility Manager and the Monitors on duty have the authority to enforce shop rules.

• No work may be done in the shop without two monitors on duty.
• No one under 18 years of age will be allowed to operate equipment. 
• Anyone who works in the shop must be a current GVR member and a current Lapidary Club member or class student. 
• Members must sign in at the attendance computer by placing their GVR card under the code reader. 
• Users are responsible for any damage to equipment or tools and are required to pay for damage if required by the Lapidary Club Board.
• The Lapidary Club provides safety equipment for eyes, ears, and lungs.  Members are encouraged to use them.
  -  Safety glasses, ear protection, and dust masks are available at each facility.
  -  Refer to "Better Safe than Sorry" or class handouts for addition safety recommendations.
• Loose clothing, long hair, etc., must be contained so that it cannot be caught in rotating equipment. Rubber gloves should not be used when operating rotating equipment for the same reason.
• If members are unfamiliar with a piece of equipment, they must check with a monitor on duty. The monitors are there to assist members in the safe and proper usage of Club equipment. Some Club equipment needs User Certification to operate. Members should notify a monitor if they find equipment inoperable or in disrepair.
• Use of equipment and tools is at the risk of the user. 
• As a courtesy to other members, all members are required to clean up after themselves after using equipment such as saws, grinders, burnishers, buffing wheels, etc. Work stations must also be left clean and tidy. Monitors are NOT responsible for cleaning up after members.
• Equipment cannot be used for commercial production purposes, only for hobby or craft items for gifts, or for items to sell on a limited basis. The Club reserves the right to place time limits on popular equipment.
• All members are expected to abide by the Revenue Policy as stated on the Membership Form and which can be found in the Membership Book located at each of the Centers.
• Members shall not approach customers or interfere with the monitor when customers are in the shop unless the monitor requests the member’s help.
• If a satisfactory piece is not available for the customer from the display case, the monitor may request a member’s assistance in providing an item that will meet the customer’s needs.
• Violations of these shop rules or continued abuse of equipment will be grounds for suspension or expulsion from the Club.  Appeal can be made to a special meeting of the Lapidary Club Board and their ruling shall be final.
• VISITORS will maintain a safe distance from equipment and are not allowed to touch equipment, tools, etc. Visitors will not be permitted in the findings and supplies area. Eye protection is available for visitors when observing machines in operation. Children must be supervised by an adult when visiting the shop.
• With the exception of Sunshine Cloths sold in a tube, visitors are not allowed to purchase findings or supplies from the Club or Club members.

MONITOR SCHEDULES

Monitor schedules are available at each center, as well as a list of substitute monitors if you cannot make your shift. There are usually two to three monitors each morning and each afternoon that the center is open. If you are the only monitor that shows up, wait for the other monitor for a bit. If no one shows, try to find a substitute. Otherwise, you will have to close the shop as you may not work alone.
